Updated: Jan 5, 2023

Do you need verification of your Form I-9 in the Portland, Oregon area? A Mobile Notary from Notary of Portland is approved to act as an authorized representative to certify that an employee whose eligibility is being determined presented appropriate identity documents. A Notary of Portland Mobile Notary will travel to meet you at your scheduled appointment time at any location you choose within the greater Portland Metro area or SW Washington. Form I-9, officially the Employment Eligibility Verification, is a United States Citizenship and Immigration Services form. Mandated by the Immigration Reform and Control Act of 1986, it is used to verify the identity and legal authorization to work of all paid employees in the United States. Before beginning work, each person in the workforce must complete Form I-9. Businesses who hire employees remotely will often require a Notary Public to complete their I-9 form verification, because Mobile Notaries have expertise in verifying identities.

A Mobile Notary acting as a designated representative to perform a Form I-9 verification will travel to meet you in person to assist with accurate completion of the form and to view and verify the original accepted documents that are approved for inclusion on USCIS Form I-9. The list of accepted documents include:

  • A United States Passport

  • A United States Passport Card

  • A Driver License

  • A US Military Card

  • An Employment Authorization Document

  • A US Coast Guard Merchant Mariner Document

  • An ID Card that has been issued by a State

  • A Permanent Resident Card

Without these documents Form I-9 cannot be verified by the employer and will not be accepted by the government. The employer is required to retain a copy of the documents used for Form I-9.

Because the I-9 verification is not considered a notarial act, the Notary will not apply their notary stamp on the I-9 form. Signing Form I-9 as a Notary Public is performed in a non-notarial capacity, as a representative for the hiring company. Some employers will provide a Notary Certification form to be signed by the Notary attesting that they personally reviewed the accepted Form I-9 original documents and that they appeared to be genuine and relate to the employee submitting them.
